There’s a lot written that we need to get rid of fear to 'move forward'. But fear is part of our thoughts … and the mind (or ego) cannot get rid of the mind! It is however, an illusion. It’s there when we’re in fight or flight mode – when we've invented a reaction to something and it grows in power when we listen to it. The mind’s logic would say that if this is the case we can destroy it or expose ourselves to more of it as a way of destroying it.
Fear loses its power over us as we stop listening to the stories it has entwined us in. The key here is to notice it … not the thing we’re reacting to but the actual feeling associated with it.
- Begin to notice when you’re reacting eg: taking things personally, comparing yourself, not stand up for something/someone, saying 'yes' when it’s really a 'no'. It’s very subtle and it’s very practised!
- Don’t judge it or yourself;
- Stop and get present – focus on your breathing and bring your attention, as Eckhardt Tolle says, to the inner field of your body. Go inward;
- Acknowledge any emotions eg resistance, frustration without getting caught up in them;
- Move on …
This takes practice and the key is to not judge the outcomes – not congratulating yourself or beating yourself up for catching it or not. Do not look for what you can learn because it is just the mind wanting to work it out. If the fear feelings or self-doubt get out of hand, the moment you notice the fear, get present! When it has latched hold of our mind, stop and catch it before it goes any further.
It’s a choice. Trust yourself. You have what you need in the moment. Let courage in the moment propel you to what you love.
